In emergencies, people do not require prayers or any other sort of incantation, they urgently need safety, and so do other species.

Perhaps you are aware that declarations and promises are much the same as prayers and other incantations.  They are merely words, even when provided in a ritualistic or legalistic way.

Much politics is ritualistic and ridiculous.

Most meetings within and between organisations are ritualistic and ridiculous.

Many military practices are ritualistic and ridiculous, even in conflict zones.
